Juneteenth: OTD in 1865, General Granger of the Union Army marched on Galveston TX, the last hold out of plantation owners who did not adopt the emancipation proclamation of January 1st 1863. Upon arrival, General Granger issued General Order 3: declaring all slaves free. It took years for the Union Army to marshal and gather enough strength and influence to issue General Order 3, and many more to enforce it. It then took decades and generations to fight for equal rights.
