The Plunge Masters practice from Thursday, October 22, 2026
This weekend, I had the privilege of climbing with One Summit, an incredible nonprofit that pairs children battling cancer with mentors, using outdoor challenges to build confidence, resilience, and connection.

I was paired with one of my new heroes: Layla.

Layla is 10 years old, a cancer survivor who recently finished chemotherapy, and has an absolutely indomitable spirit.

We set a goal of 10 climbs. Layla wasn’t satisfied with that. She powered through 20 climbs, including three 5.10a routes!

life is tough. We can get beat down and overwhelmed. We can get caught up in our own issues. Rationalize skipping workouts... Then you meet someone like Layla, who quietly recalibrates your perspective.

That’s not to diminish what anyone is going through. The struggle is real. But sometimes we could spend a little less time dwelling on what’s difficult and a little more time discovering what we’re capable of.

Set a goal. Find your courage. Keep climbing.

Thank you, Layla, for the reminder. You’re one of my heroes.

20 x “climbs”. The effort gets harder. But the finish is worth it.
